"An Easter Vigil Reflection"

A reflection on the Easter Vigil by Catharine Phillips

Every year a piece of the Vigil
catches me by surprise
It’s never the same part
Either
I guess that’s the meaning of surprise
I’m never expecting it
I guess that’s part of the meaning too
All parts speak but the Surprise
Is fluid, flowing
I never know which crack
It will fill
This year it even reached
To the second to the last pew
Where I was sitting
Anchored by Jeff’s hand
Holding mine
I knew going in it would not be easy

This year I was caught by the bells
Surprised
The simple abandon of the massive cow bell
Rung by the boys across the aisle
The well beyond simple
Tintinnabulation throughout the Gloria
Abandon rippling from front to back and
Back to front
No simple zimbelstern, this

You were different halfway through
Said the Handholder
It was the bells
I said
It was the bells
The bells
Caught me by Surprise
