About Tom

The Reverend Thomas Craighead was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of Chicago in 2012. He served at St. Andrew’s Downers Grove from 2012 through 2018. Tom currently leads formation of new deacons in the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago and is member of the Diocesan Deacons Leadership Team. He headed the creation of the current paradigm of competency-based formation for postulants and candidates geared to making the diaconate more accessible and based on life experiences. In addition to his passion for participating in community liturgical worship, Tom is focused on social justice at St Marks through their participation in DuPage United and other organizations. Tom is an active member of the DuPage NAACP and committed to identifying and addressing many forms of bias. Tom also works in pastoral ministry in the parish and beyond, especially in serious illness and end of life. He trained in Clinical Pastoral Education at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Tom holds a BA from Carleton College, Masters of Arts in Teaching from Colgate University, and BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He retired after a career in manufacturing, software for production and engineering, and business management consulting.

In his recreation time, Tom is an avid cyclist, hiker, and kayaker. Tom and Susan take advantage of their retirement years by traveling as often as possible.

Tom has been married to Susan for over 40 years. They have two married daughters, one in Downers Grove and one in Bellingham, Washington, and three grandchildren.
